MIDFIELDER Oriol Romeu revealed his stunning volley against West Brom was the best goal of his career but admitted: “It doesn’t happen very often.”

The Spanish star fired home his first goal since February 2019 in Sunday’s 2-0 victory over the Baggies but insisted he was focusing on connection, rather than picking his spot.

It was his sixth goal in 194 appearances for the St Mary’s side.

Romeu told the club website: “It’s the best goal, but’s easy to be up there because there are not many others!”

“Most of them are rebounds, not a clean shot from outside the box.

“It doesn’t happen very often, but I’m very happy. I’m very pleased to have scored that goal after a while.”

The second-half strike added to Moussa Djenepo’s neat finish to send Saints to their first victory at St Mary’s this season.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men are now 11th in the table going into the October international break.

“The ball came very well and very clean, and I just went for the duel and saw the ball in the back of the net,” added Romeu.

“I wasn’t aiming anywhere, I just tried to hit the ball well and clean. It was great, I was very happy.

“Everyone was a bit surprised. We’ll see if there can be a few more coming, hopefully.”
