SAINTS skipper James Ward-Prowse has withdrawn from the England squad through injury.

The midfielder, who has been a standout performer in helping the St Mary’s side move up to fourth in the top flight, has been pulled out as a precautionary measure due to a tight hamstring.

Borussia Dortmund starlet Jude Bellingham has been called up in his place for games against Ireland, Belgium and Iceland.

A statement from Saints said: “Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse has withdrawn from the latest England squad as a precautionary measure with a tight hamstring.

“It has been agreed that he will now remain with Saints during the international break to receive treatment with the club.”

Ward-Prowse has been ever-present for Saints in all competitions this season, having scored three times and registered an assist in the league.

The 26-year-old struck home two sublime free-kicks against Aston Villa on his birthday earlier this month – a feat which drew praise from England boss Gareth Southgate when he initially named the Three Lions squad.

Southgate said: "James is a player who has worked with us for a long time and is being given more responsibility with this club. He is playing in a more central position this year and is playing more regularly.

"He has a good range of passing and with his club, they press well, so his work on regains and protecting his defence is good.

"His set plays are world-class, really.

“He has got as good a delivery as any player I have ever played with or managed. He has a really high level of ability.”

Saints striker Danny Ings will also not feature for the Three Lions this month as he continues to recover from a knee injury.
