FORMER Saints striker Charlie Austin believes Danny Ings “would be a good fit” for Premier League big-guns Tottenham.

Frontman Austin was a team-mate of Ings during both his time at St Mary’s and in the Championship at Burnley.

Spurs are one of a number of clubs linked with Saints’ star striker, who currently has 18 months remaining on his contract at St Mary’s.

Asked on talkSPORT whether Ings would be a good fit for Tottenham, Austin, now on loan at Queens Park Rangers from West Brom, said: “I think it would be a good fit.

“For Danny, it was all about going to Southampton, playing games and forgetting about the injury record he had.

“That’s part and parcel of football – everyone says ‘oh, you’re injury prone’ that’s football. The way football has evolved now, it is part and parcel of the game.

“He had two big knee injuries which didn’t help. He came to Southampton and got games under his belt, all of a sudden the goals came and it’s just shown what a fantastic finisher he is.”

Ings has scored seven times in 14 Premier League games this season. He netted on 22 occasions, having played in all 38 fixtures last campaign.

“He just brings much more to the team as well, his all-round game is second to none and the goals just put him in the right direction,” said Austin.

“Last year he scored 20-plus goals and this year he is on the way to get the same amount.

“There is no surprise he is linked with a club like Tottenham.”
