DEFENDER Jan Bednarek will be available for Saints' trip to Newcastle United this weekend, despite being sent off on Tuesday evening.

Bednarek was given his marching orders in the 86th minute as Saints were hammered 9-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Referee Mike Dean initially awarded a penalty when Anthony Martial went down under a challenge from the Pole, before being encouraged to consult the pitchside monitor by video assistant referee Graham Scott.

Upon review, Dean upheld his decision and also sent Bednarek off, much to Saints' protests.

But the FA have now confirmed the 24-year-old will be available to take on Newcastle at St James's Park after Saints appealed the red card.

A statement from the FA read: "Jan Bednarek will be available for Southampton FC's next fixture after an independent Regulatory Commission upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal and removed his suspension.

"The defender was sent off for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity during a Premier League fixture against Manchester United FC on Tuesday (02/02/21)."

Asked for his thoughts on the decision after the game, captain James Ward-Prowse told the Daily Echo: "People can make their own decisions on that, we don’t need to comment on it. It’s disappointing."

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: "Bednarek definitely shouldn't have been sent off.

"I think the law needs to be looked at, but the letter of the law, if you foul someone, deny a goalscoring opportunity and you don't attempt the ball, you've got to be shown a red card.

"There was contact there, but he shouldn't be sent off. I think everyone in football agrees on this."
