BOSS Ralph Hasenhuttl insisted the call to overturn Jan Bednarek’s red card against Manchester United was “the only possible decision”.

Bednarek was given his marching orders in the 86th minute as Saints were hammered 9-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Referee Mike Dean initially awarded a penalty when Anthony Martial went down under a challenge from the Pole, before being encouraged to consult the pitchside monitor by video assistant referee Graham Scott.

Upon review, Dean upheld his decision and also sent Bednarek off, much to Saints' protests.

Speaking about Bednarek's situation, the boss said: "It was the only possible decision for us.

“It's just a pity that this decision was not made during the game because maybe there would have been less drama."

The decision to overturn the red card means Bednarek will be available for Saturday's trip to Newcastle (3pm).
