SOUTHAMPTON-born Maddie Hinch and the Team GB hockey team stepped up their defence of Olympic gold by thumping South Africa 4-1 in matchday two.

The Olympic champions suffered a narrow defeat in their opening game against Germany but have got themselves back on track to progress with victory.

Knowing they needed a win to recover, Team GB got off to a bad start going one behind but completed the turnaround with ease – while Hinch was on top form to deny the opponents at the other end.

The goals were provided by Lily Owsley, Laura Unsworth and a crucial brace from Ellie Rayer.

The win boosts the side’s hopes of qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 quarter-finals as they are now sat third in Group A after their opening two matches.

Team GB are in action again today when they face India, who lost their opening fixture to the Netherlands.
