ANDREW Davies is set to become a Saints player on a permanent basis.

The 23-year-old centre-half has been on loan at the club from Middlesbrough since October and has impressed in his 12 appearances so far for Saints.

There was a fear a proposed permanent deal could stumble after Davies was unable to play in the FA Cup third round win over Leicester at the weekend to ensure he wasn't Cup tied if he moved back to Boro.

But Saints have moved to tie up a £1m deal for Davies, a signing which Burley believes is important for the future of the club.

He said: "Andrew is 23 and for me there's no doubt he's got Premiership quality.

"He's shown he's an excellent defender who is good in the air, strong and competitive.

"To get a young defender like this would be great - it's very important for the future of the club."

There is not such good news of other loan players, Phil Ifil and Alan Bennett.
