WITH the shock departure of Danny Ings to Aston Villa, Saints lost one of their key men in ensuring survival during the last two Premier League seasons – but that kind of deal is no stranger to supporters.

The club have been relentless in selling their top talents for big money throughout the last decade, with some even moving for record fees.

It’s a constant source of frustration but it is the realisation that Saints are often powerless to stop their self-made products or purchased players from moving on.

We take a look at some of the best players sold by Saints in the last ten years.

Danny Ings - 21/22

With 34 Premier League strikes since the start of the 2019/20 season, his goals have been vital and earned him the chance to score in a Three Lions shirt too – and cost Villa £30m to acquire.

Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg - 20/21

Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg has only improved in the short time since he left Saints and banked the club £15m+. He became a key player under Jose Mourinho at Spurs and then was a standout performer for Denmark, as they reached the European Championship semi-final.

Dusan Tadic – 18/19

Dusan Tadic was the first signing during Ronald Koeman’s reign and became only the fourth player to achieve three or more assists in more than one Premier League game, with a trio against Manchester City in 2016, after he assisted a joint-record four against Sunderland (8-0). He’s gone on to score 53 league goals in 93 appearances for Ajax.

Virgil van Dijk - 17/18

Likely the best player on this list in many estimations, Virgil van Dijk banked the club £75m and is now a Premier League and Champions League winner. It showed he good he really is following Liverpool’s performances without him last season.

Sadio Mane - 16/17

Another that was sold to Liverpool, Sadio Mane broke the record for fasting Premier League hat-trick scoring three times in 2 minutes 56 seconds during a 6–1 win over Aston Villa. Joint top-goalscorer in 2018-19 season (22).

Graziano Pelle - 16/17

Graziano Pelle will forever be a favourite for Saints fans, despite scoring at a slower rate than Ings, for example. He arrived at Saints having netted 50 goals in not many more games, and banked himself a mega-contract with Shandong Luneng on the way out.

Nathaniel Clyne - 15/16

A third and not final Liverpool switch, right-back Nathanial Clyne earned Saints a cool £15m. Probably not up there with some of the other names on this list but was a Premier League stalwart for three seasons at a young age.

Morgan Schneiderlin - 15/16

It never really worked for the Frenchman at Manchester United despite costing almost £32m, but he did rise with Saints right from League One up to the Premier League, and even landing a Europa League spot.

Luke Shaw - 14/15

Academy product Luke Shaw has gone on a rocky path to success since leaving Saints as a teen but has now cemented himself as one of the world’s best full-backs. The England man was imperious throughout but crowned off his Euro 2020 performances with a goal merely seconds into the final.

Adam Lallana - 14/15

Almost the last one to move to Liverpool, Adam Lallana is another who rose from League One with Saints and landed the club almost £30m. He scored 15 in the third division in 2009-10, before going on to become a 34-time England international and Prem/Champions League winner.

Dejan Lovren – 14/15

Dejan Lovren raised some eyebrows when he claimed he was one of the best defenders in the world, following the 2018 World Cup. But to be fair, the Croat had reached the Champions League and World Cup final. His Saints spell was short lived before a Liverpool move.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 11/12

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is another Saints academy product who’s gone on to win basically everything there is to win at club level with Arsenal and Liverpool. He hasn’t won the League Cup though… I doubt he loses sleep over that.
