SWANSEA manager Russell Martin thinks Saints striker Michael Obafemi is an improvement on their outgoing Jamal Lowe, insisting: “Michael probably suits us a little bit more.”

The South Wales side sold Jamaican international Lowe to fellow Championship outfit Bournemouth for a similar fee that they paid to Saints.

But the versatile forward did hit 14 goals for them and didn’t miss a single league game last campaign, on their way to Wembley in the play-off final.

Martin has moved to squash any worries that the 27-year-old attacker’s impact couldn’t be replaced, and has said that they’ve already got a player who will be better for them in 21-year-old Obafemi.

The former MK Dons boss said: “I asked him (Jamal Lowe) outright.

“He was really honest and he said he would like to go because he feels maybe he doesn’t fit into the system completely. He’d had interest from a couple of clubs.

"I want people who really want to be at the club. I have no ill-feeling towards Jamal. He’s got a move which feels is good for him.

"The club have been able to replace him with Michael which probably suits us a little bit more. He is young asset and can be a real asset to the club.

"It made sense to allow Jamal to go. He did a great job last year, playing in a formation that we don’t play."

Obefami could be in line to make his Swansea debut when they welcome Hull to Liberty Stadium on Saturday 11 September, after the international break.

Striking four goals in 32 Premier League appearances, the young Republic of Ireland hopeful will look to increase his output in front of the opposition net.
