Steve Bruce joins Lawrie McMenemy in 1000 Club Hall of Fame

The LMA Hall of Fame 1000 Club recognises any LMA member who has managed 1000 competitive first team matches at full-time professional clubs in the Premier League, EFL or equivalent overseas, Women’s Super League or equivalent overseas, domestic cup competitions, UEFA-sanctioned competitive matches or equivalent continental competitions and FIFA-sanctioned international matches.

The Newcastle boss reached 1000 games in management during his side’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur – although the celebration will be subdued if he is sacked this week following their takeover.

Saints’ FA Cup winning manager McMenemy was already inducted into the club after his career saw him also take charge of Bishops Auckland, Doncaster Rovers, Grimsby Town and Sunderland.

McMenemy was Saints manager between 1973 and 1985.

As well as McMenemy, former Saints managers Dave Bassett (caretaker in 2005) and Harry Redknapp are also part of the 1000 club, while Jim Smith – who was an assistant at Saints – is another name on the list.

Bruce started his management career with Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town, Wigan Athletic and Crystal Palace before becoming manager of Birmingham in 2001.

He then managed Wigan again, Sunderland, Hull City, Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday before his current spell with boyhood side Newcastle.
