RALPH Hasenhuttl was left "very proud" of his Saints side after they thumped Brentford 4-1 at St Mary's, to move up to 11th in the Premier League.

The game came just three days after Saints were pushed all the way to extra time by Swansea City in the FA Cup on Saturday.

But the hosts were dominant for the majority of the evening against Thomas Frank's Bees with Jan Bednarek, Che Adams and Armando Broja among the scorers.

Vitaly Janelt scored for Brentford, while Alvaro Fernandez was credited with an own goal after Ibrahima Diallo's shot struck the post.

Assessing the performance, Hasenhuttl said: "It was absolutely fantastic, after a tough Saturday, 120 minutes, this energy to put on the pitch today from the first moment on, I must say that I am very proud of my team.

"We played again a different shape (5-3-2). They did it fantastic, the second half even better.

"The first half with the ball they could do it even better, but we spoke about that at the half-time, learned again about what we want to do without a full-back, without a right-back really, with Nathan Tella in this position.

"A lot of things we tried today, everything worked at this is absolutely fantastic to see."

He added: "You could feel in the last weeks we are getting more and more flexible, the young players are getting better and everybody is making steps forward. We have spoken about scoring the second, third and fourth goal, it is time to do this.

"And today we had clinical finishing also in some moments. This is how you should play at home."
