George Burley is to be offered the Scotland manager's job by the Scottish Football Association tomorrow.
The Saints manager has been in charge since signing a two-and-a-half year contract St Mary's in December 2005.
It is understood that the SFA contacted Saints this afternoon to discuss compensation for Burley.
The 51-year-old is now on a one-year rolling contract at St Mary's so the SFA would have to pay out around £300,000 for his services.
Provided he accepts, Burley's first game in charge of his national side will be against Croatia at Hampden Park on March 26.
But Saints are still hopeful of hanging on to their man.
Earlier this afternoon, Leon Crouch, the chairman of the Saints football board, said: "It's all hypothetical. George Burley is the Southampton manager and will remain so."
