RALF Rangnick revealed that he has told Manchester United outcast Dean Henderson that he wants him to stay, despite reports linking him to Saints among other clubs.
The 24-year-old hopeful England shot-stopper has made just four appearances in all competitions for United this campaign.
David De Gea’s resurgence in form has seen him fall out of favour under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and new boss Rangnick.
Football Insider reported that Saints made an enquiry to the Red Devils about what it could take to sign Henderson this month.
All three of Saints’ senior goalkeepers have contracts that are set to expire at the end of the season and a permanent solution will have to be found in summer, if not now.
However, United boss Rangnick has revealed that he told Henderson he wants him to stay and help him fight on three fronts.
“Well, I told him that I would like him to stay because he's a fantastic goalkeeper,” Rangnick said.
“In training yesterday, he had another couple of fantastic saves. I really like to have him on board, as one of three top goalkeepers.
“I can fully understand that he wants to play because he's in an age where as a goalkeeper he should regularly play.
“On the other hand, we are still in three competitions, we need the three goalkeepers we have right now.
“I told him that but I can also on the other hand understand his desire to get game time elsewhere in the Premier League.”
After impressing on loan at Sheffield United and then in spells for the Red Devils, Henderson could be keen to build on his experience before he falls too far down the Three Lions pecking order.
Alex McCarthy is thought to be the one goalkeeper that Saints will extend the contract of, potentially allowing 40-year-old Willy Caballero and Fraser Forster to leave at the end of their deals.
Henderson has a contract with United that runs until 2025.
