HAMPSHIRE have announced the signing of Australian batter Ben McDermott for this summer’s Vitality Blast.

The 27-year-old, who has played two one-day internationals and 20 T20s for his country, was the top run-scorer in the last Big Bash League with 577 at an average of 48.08 for the Hobart Hurricanes.

McDermott, who also became the first player in BBL history to record back-to-back centuries, told Hampshire’s official website: “I am really excited to join the Hawks for this summer’s Vitality Blast.

“I’m looking forward to joining James Vince and the team at The Ageas Bowl and am hoping I can contribute to a successful T20 campaign.”

Hampshire director of cricket Giles White said: “Ben is an exciting talent and we are really pleased that he’s joining us for the Vitality Blast.

“He had an excellent BBL and his power and ability to clear the ropes make him an excellent fit for us. We are looking forward to seeing him in a Hawks shirt this summer.”

McDermott will wear the number 28 shirt for the Ageas Bowl outfit.

Hampshire begin their campaign with a home fixture against Middlesex on Friday, May 27.
