RETIRED ace Micah Richards has labelled Saints captain James Ward-Prowse as “the most underrated player in the Premier League for years”.

Former Manchester City defender Richards and United legend Gary Neville were discussing England’s 2022 World Cup hopes in a LADbible TV appearance.

The pair emphatically agreed that 27-year-old Ward-Prowse should be on the plane to Qatar, with Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions.

Ward-Prowse has already amassed 10 goal contributions in the Premier League, including six finishes of his own, so far this campaign, only missing two games.

Asked by Neville if Ward-Prowse should be there at the end of the year, Richards responded: “Yes, he’s the most underrated player in the Premier League for years.

“And people say maybe he doesn’t have the mobility, but he works hard, he’s always 7/10 with that great right foot.

“You know what lets him down? Because he’s so good at free-kicks, like your mate David Beckham, people forget all the other stuff he does, and that’s his problem. But he’s a top player.”

“We're on the same page, I like him,” Neville replied.

Ward-Prowse has been capped nine times by England manager Southgate, scoring twice.

Three Lions have two home friendlies versus Switzerland and Ivory Coast at the end of March, with Ward-Prowse expected to retain his squad status.

The punditry pair were also asked if England will win the World Cup, and unfortunately agreed on that answer too.

“I disagree, I don’t think they will,” said Neville. “I think they’re as close as they’ll ever get, they’re a brilliant bunch.

“I think they’ve done brilliant the last two tournaments but I just think when we cut to the chase… look I hope so, because they deserve to. Gareth deserves to, and this group of players do.

“I just think France, Germany, Spain, you’ve got Brazil, Argentina coming into it, Senegal, all these countries that are fantastic.”

Richards added: “I still think they’re a couple of years away.”
