SAINTS Women put a title-winning destiny in their own hands with a 2-1 comeback victory at league-leaders Ipswich Town.

After elimination from the FA Cup at the Tractor Girls earlier this year, Paige Peake’s opening goal in the first-half of this National League contest hinted towards a similar fate.

However, Marieanne Spacey-Cale’s side responded with an excellent second-half that saw hotshot Lucia Kendall bag superbly again – before Ella Pusey’s clinical finish put Saints ahead.

Kendall levelled the scores with an exquisite half-volley from long-range at the Goldstar Ground.

Saints had been eliminated in the FA Cup tie via a penalty shootout, after goalkeeper Kayla Rendell scored a header with the last touch of extra-time.

This result moves Saints onto 53 points, within one point at the top, with two games in hand over Ipswich. Oxford United, who are in third and have played one more match, are three points behind.

There are six matches remaining, so if they win five of those and they will be crowned champions. The champions will play off for promotion to the Championship versus the Northern Premier Division’s winners.

With the National League Cup final coming up this month versus Huddersfield, it gives Spacey-Cale’s outfit a chance of winning a double.

From 20 league matches this season, Saints have drawn two and lost just one, winning 17.
