JAMES Ward-Prowse is set to make his 300th Premier League appearance for Saints tomorrow, despite the captain being just 27-years-old.

England international Ward-Prowse will become the 142nd player to reach the 300 mark in Premier League competition, after debuting at Etihad Stadium versus champions Manchester City at 17.

Ward-Prowse has made 358 appearances for Saints’ first-team across all competitions, scoring 41 goals and having registered 47 direct assists.

Of his 41 goals, 37 of those have come in the top-flight of England’s league system. The academy graduate could mark his 300th Premier League appearance with an eighth goal of the season at Burnley.

“300 and he’s not even that old. He can go to 400 or 500 - I don’t know if it’s possible, maybe yes,” manager Ralph Hasenhuttl told the Daily Echo of his skipper.

“Absolutely the captain that you want to have on the pitch, every game he invests the most. This season I think he’s made another step forward in his game and it’s fantastic to see.”

The record for Premier League appearances is held by Gareth Barry (653), while Ryan Giggs and Frank Lampard also both made over 600 each.

If Ward-Prowse is to score at Turf Moor, he will match his season-best total – which came last campaign – ahead of a busy June schedule of England fixtures, and the World Cup in November.

For Saints, they are within one point of Brighton in the top-half ahead of visiting the Amex Stadium later this week.

“Turf Moor is never an easy place to go and they are fighting for their life now,” Hasenhuttl insisted, however.

“This was the atmosphere you have to expect there so you have to be resistant and have to know that you it's not always about playing that football, it is about defending your goal with all you have.”
