FORMER Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson insisted he is “yet to be convinced” if James Ward-Prowse is good enough for someone like Spurs.
The 27-year-old Saints captain has been subject to reports linking him to a transfer worth up to £75million to top-six clubs in England, after another stellar season.
England international Ward-Prowse has scored nine Premier League goals and registered another five assists across his 34 appearances this season.
Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl insisted “he is staying” when asked on his future, and the academy graduate is contracted to 2026 after signing a five-year deal last summer.
However, this has not stopped pundits and retired professionals discussing Ward-Prowse’s future and touting him to bigger clubs in England, ahead of the World Cup.
Robinson, who played 41 times for the Three Lions between 2003-2007, admitted he does not think Ward-Prowse improves his former London side.
“I’m not so sure about Ward-Prowse,” he told Football Insider.
“Make no mistake about it, his set-pieces are incredible. But I am yet to be convinced about his all-round game.
“Yes, he stands out in a Southampton team but could he stand out in a Spurs team? Could he take Spurs to the next level?
“Which is competing regularly in the Champions League. I’m not sure he could if I’m honest. I’d be looking elsewhere.”
Saints look set for another season in the Premier League and supporters will hope to see new owners Sport Republic show ambition in the summer window.
That will include keeping Ward-Prowse at the club, and building around him with improvements to the first-team and squad via transfers.
