REPUBLIC of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny has not ruled out an international return for Saints forward Shane Long, despite omission in favour of Michael Obafemi.
The 21-year-old former Saints man, who departed St Mary’s for Championship Swansea City last summer, earned a recall to replace injured Adam Idah.
Obafemi, who scored 12 goals in 32 second division appearances this season, looks set to earn at least his second cap with four Nations League fixtures to come.
Shane Long, 35, has played 88 times for his country, scoring 17, but the last of those caps came nearly 14 months ago.
He looks set to exit Saints with his current contract expiring at the end of June, having made 11 Premier League appearances and returning with a solitary goal versus Everton.
“I spoke to Shane this week,” Kenny explained when speaking to Virgin Media News. “Shane hasn’t played much this season, but played recently and did well.
“He has been an amazing player for Ireland and his attitude is terrific. As a person, he is someone that we really value as a person in Irish football history. He’s had a few great moments and a great career.
“It wouldn’t be fair to say that (he’s no longer in the plans). Anything is possible. The door is open for him in the future.”
Republic of Ireland kick off their upcoming four games with a trip to Armenia on Saturday, June 4.
