ENGLAND boss Gareth Southgate was pleased with what he saw from Saints skipper James Ward-Prowse against Italy.

The 27-year-old earned his 11th cap for the Three Lions during Saturday's goalless stalemate in the Nations League.

Ward-Prowse was part of a much-changed line-up and completed the full 90 minutes at Molineux. He was booked late on for a sliding challenge on Matteo Pessina.

Southgate made six changes in all from the draw in Germany, with Ward-Prowse, Aaron Ramsdale, Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham all among those to come in.

Reflecting on Ward-Prowse's performance, Southgate said: “I thought James Ward-Prowse did really well.

"He used the ball well, he controlled the game and his passing was good.”

England sit bottom of their Nations League group, with two points from three matches.

Ward-Prowse will hope to win his 12th cap when England round off their June fixtures, hosting Hungary at Molineux on Tuesday (7.45pm).
