FORMER Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino has finally been axed by European giants Paris Saint-Germain after months of speculation surrounding his future.

Pochettino, who managed Saints between January 2013 and May 2014, lasted a similar amount of time in charge of the Parisians, ultimately paying for his perceived failure to lead the star-studded club to Champions League glory.

Members of his coaching staff, assistant manager Miguel d’Agostino, fitness coach Jesus Pérez, and goalkeeping coach Toni Jimenez, have also left the club, with the trio also employed by Saints during Pochettino’s reign.

Unable to salvage the league title after arriving in January 2021, this season Pochettino helped PSG to the league title with four games to spare.

However, after defeat in the Round of 16 against Real Madrid, it always appeared the 50-year-old’s time in the French capital would be coming to a close at the end of the season, with Zinedine Zidane and Christophe Galtier heavily linked with the role.

In the end it was former Nice boss Galtier who was appointed to replace the Argentine.

Galtier served as assistant manager at Portsmouth alongside Alain Perrin in 2005.

A club statement read: “Paris Saint-Germain confirm that Mauricio Pochettino has ended his role at the club.

“The Argentine coach and his team joined the club in January 2021.

“A former captain of the Rouge & Bleus, Pochettino took charge of 84 competitive games.

“Under his tenure, Paris Saint-Germain won the 2020 Trophée des Champions and the 2020/21 Coupe de France, as well as the club’s historic 10th Ligue 1 title last April.

“The club would like to thank Mauricio Pochettino and his staff for their work and wish them the best for the future.”
