NEW Saints signing Megan Wynne is set to face former side Charlton Athletic on the opening day of the season, and insisted: “I’m confident we can more than compete.”

The 29-year-old Welsh international became Marieanne Spacey-Cale’s fourth signing of the summer, as Saints prepare for a debut season in the Championship.

Winger Wynne could line up immediately against the side she played for in the second division last campaign, the Addicks, when they visit the south coast on Sunday, August 21.

“It will be a tough game, I know there are lots of new faces there who will be eager to impress but I’m confident we can more than compete,” she told the club website.

“I think every game will be different, there’s a range of different teams that will pose different threats but facing your old teams is always a good thing.”

Wynne brings a wealth of Championship experience to the newly-promoted outfit, with spells at Watford, Millwall and Tottenham Hotspur already under her belt.

“I think the Championship is a really tough league so having played in it for such a long time, probably since the start of it,” Wynne recalled.

“I can bring that competitiveness and show what the girls need to be like to be in this league.

“Every game is tough, the level of experience I’ve got I know what it takes to be around the top of the league.”

Wynne has joined the squad on their trip to Scotland, where they are set to face Scottish Premiership side Celtic on Saturday, July 16 (10am).

I’m really excited, it’s a fresh new start. I’ve been here a couple days now and it’s been great to meet the girls. I’m really excited to get going,” she added.

“I think it’s important to step away from the training ground and get to know people away from the pitch, having that team bonding is important on and off the field.”
