A FIERY Ralph Hasenhuttl said “I’m sorry that we destroyed a few headlines, they were probably written”, after Saints drew 2-2 with Leeds United.

His side were trailing by two goals going into the final 25 minutes of the Premier League match, after having suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat the weekend before.

Reports had emerged midweek suggested a soured atmosphere in the Saints dressing room, following a run of one win in 13 league matches to end last campaign.

Saints looked on course for a second successive defeat after Rodrigo’s second-half brace, but goals from Joe Aribo and Kyle Walker-Peters saw them pull level.

"I'm sorry that we destroyed a few headlines because they were probably written at that moment,” he said, at full-time.

Daily Echo:

“The team gave the answer. We had a tough week because of some circumstances but we showed a good reaction. I expected nothing else from this fantastic group.”

The Saints performance lifted when Hasenhuttl changed his pawns and swapped from a five-back to the standard 4-2-2-2.

Jan Bednarek made way for the impressive Sekou Mara, who slipped Walker-Peters through 10 minutes from time.

“That’s right, yes, we had to go all in at that moment,” Hasenhuttl said.

“The team, although we had tough temperatures today, the team were flying, trying everything to win the game.

“We had a big chance with Sekou Mara towards the end, a good save from the goalkeeper otherwise maybe you win this game. It was a good comeback from our side.”
