EVERTON could be without key players in goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and defender Nathan Patterson ahead of their meeting with Saints.

The England international shot-stopper has missed the final international matches before the World Cup with a thigh injury.

They will hope he can return in time for the Premier League clash with Saints on Saturday, October 1, but the international break has added to their woes.

Now, they look set to lose Scottish international right-back Patterson – who had played every minute for Toffees boss Frank Lampard so far.

The 20-year-old was stretchered off with an ankle injury during Scotland’s clash with Ukraine this week but has posted a hopeful update on social media.

Patterson said: "My face whenever I miss a game. So far, so good and keeping fingers crossed for positive news this week. Good luck to the Scotland boys tonight."

The promising youngster could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines but even good news will likely rule him out of the visit to St Mary’s.

Left-back Vitaly Mykolenko, also of Everton, missed the same game when he felt discomfort in the build-up and could be a doubt next weekend.

Everton were comfortably defeated 2-0 at St Mary’s in February but currently sit level with Saints on seven points after seven matches this campaign.
