SAINTS skipper James Ward-Prowse has suffered heartbreak for the second major tournament in succession, as he missed out on England’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

Left out of the final 23-man group for the European Championship in 2021, the midfielder this time was not selected in England boss Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man line-up.

Ward-Prowse featured for the Three Lions as late as June this year in a Nations League 0-0 draw with Italy, one of his 11 senior caps for his country.

But he will not add to his collection in the upcoming month’s tournament having been left out.

Ward-Prowse has not missed a minute of league action for Saints this season, having scored on the opening day of the campaign against Tottenham and registered an assist against Leicester back in August.

He netted from the penalty spot for Saints in their Carabao Cup third round shootout victory over Sheffield Wednesday at St Mary’s on Wednesday evening.
