What Jones saw in his maiden Premier League game was hardly a major surprise as Liverpool dominated the first half en route to a 3-1 lead at the break.

Saints displayed significantly more fight after the interval but multiple impressive Alisson saves coupled with yet more profligate finishing saw the scoreline remain the same at full time.

Speaking to the Daily Echo after the defeat, Jones took the game as the crucial learning experience Saints needed it to be.

"I wasn't here to get autographs or anything, I was here because I want to learn about my team and my players, learn about myself, my staff, everything. All on one of the toughest stages you can start on.

"I'm proud to be Premier League manager and to have taken this game today but I have learned a lot today."

Fortunately, Jones has arrived at the perfect time. Following the tip to Merseyside, Saints now have almost six weeks before their next Premier League fixture, at home against Brighton & Hove Albion on Boxing Day.

The World Cup break has given Jones the gift of unobstructed time to work his with his squad and with very few Saints players heading o Qatar, most of that squad will stay behind to work with their new manager.

By Jones' own admission, there is a lot that Saints need to address through this quiet period. Here are three specific weaknesses we've picked out that Jones needs to fix over the next month...
