LEAD coach Ruben Selles has explained his decision to leave FC Copenhagen for Saints this summer as a “step forward for me”, after conversations with Sport Republic.

The Spaniard was assistant manager of the successful Danish side before he left this summer to become Ralph Hasenhuttl’s number two.

Selles’s significant role became apparent during the early weeks of the season and he even took on responsibility of set-pieces following Alex Clapham’s sudden departure.

Nathan Jones, now Saints manager after Hasenhuttl’s sacking this month, has brought with him two assistants of his own – but Selles remains key to the group.

And speaking to Danish publication Tipsbladet, the UEFA Pro License coach has explained why he decided to leave his post after initially wanting to stay.

“I have had conversations with some of them (the Saints owners) before,” the 39-year-old revealed.

“So when we finished the season in Denmark (with FC Copenhagen), they approached me with a very specific offer.

“After that we had some conversations over the course of two to three days and then they decided to offer me the position.”

Selles added: “Their offer was in many respects, not only financially, a step forward for me.

“It’s a big role in the best league in the world, so I decided to switch, as Southampton were also very clear about the fact they wanted me. When someone is so ready, it’s just a pleasure.”

Selles went on to become interim manager during the changeover period between Hasenhuttl and Jones, leading the side for the EFL Cup tie with Sheffield Wednesday.
