JIMMY-JAY Morgan insisted “confidence is a massive thing for me” after netting a first hat-trick at under-21s level for Saints B.

The 16-year-old had scored back-to-back braces in matches prior and has helped guide his team to two wins in their opening two Premier League cup matches.

Monday’s treble came in a 4-0 win over Birmingham City but he had also bagged two to come from behind versus Division One opposition Everton last time out in the cup.

Morgan, who featured on the bench for the first team’s EFL Cup clash with Sheffield Wednesday this month, has 16 goals in 20 games in all competitions this campaign.

“It was a great team performance, we stuck to the game plan and we knew it wouldn’t be the toughest game of the season so if we got the reactions and performances right we would win,” Morgan reflected, speaking to the club website.

“On a personal note, it’s back-to-back-to-back braces now so it’s nice to top it off with a match ball. Confidence is a massive thing for me and especially for strikers.

“The whole team is flooded with confidence at the moment and we go into every game expecting a win. I’ve got to continue it for as long as possible really and see where it gets me.”

The youngster added: “Momentum is building, it has been for a while and everyone is behind all the coaching staff, we believe in what we do. If we get the reactions right the football takes care of itself because we’ve got top quality everywhere.

“There’s not many players my age playing under-21s football at this stage of the season so it’s that trust and belief that the coaching staff give me gives me the opportunity to do the stuff like this.”
