FORMER Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino has joined supporters in celebrating Maya Yoshida’s performances as Japan secured an historic qualification in the World Cup.

The 34-year-old defender captained his side to top their group with victories over both Germany and Spain, despite defeat to Costa Rica in their second match.

Japan defeated one of the tournament’s favourites in Spain 2-1 to secure qualification and ultimately knock Germany out of the competition on Thursday.

Yoshida picked up his 125th cap in the process, and Saints supporters were delighted to see the cult hero – who made 194 appearances with the St Mary’s side.

Pochettino managed Yoshida at Saints between January 2013 and May 2014, and sent his former ace a message to congratulate him.

On Twitter, he sent: "Proud of you Maya Yoshida. Congratulations Japan Football Association."

Saints supporter Graham Watford added: “Couldn’t happen to a nicer player. Forever a Saint.”

Michelle Maton, also an avid Saints fan, concluded: “Really pleased for him.”

Japan are set to face group runners-up Croatia in the last 16 of the World Cup, on Monday. December 5, with Yoshida again expected to take the armband.

Yoshida currently plays in the German Bundesliga, having moved to Gelsenkirchen-based Schalke from Sampdoria this summer.

He has featured in every league match this season but faces a tough test to help his new employers avoid relegation to the second division.
