SAINTS record-signing Kamaldeen Sulemana has vowed to improve after impressing in his St Mary’s debut despite his side’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves.

Kamaldeen arrived on the South Coast in the final hours of transfer deadline-day, joining from French club Rennes for a club-record fee. And after making his debut off the bench at Brentford, he was named in the starting XI for the first time ahead of Saturday’s clash with Wolves.

Lively throughout, Kamaldeen linked up well with fellow new signing Paul Onuachu and nearly made it 2-0 in the second half, only to be denied by a terrific piece of goalkeeping from Jose Sa.

While the late disintegration to ten-man Wolves ended up costing Nathan Jones his job, Kamaldeen's all-action performance was certainly a positive from another disheartening defeat.

The thrilling winger racked up more touches than any other Saints player (80), more shots (6), and more successful dribbles (8).

Speaking to external media for the first time since his arrival a fortnight ago, the Ghanaian international told the Daily Echo:

"I’ve settled in quite well. I think with more games, more training, I will settle even more. I just need to keep going to get better, game by game, week by week, that’s the only way forward.

"I’m here to do my best, help the team, to help myself as well and get better. We stick together, this is the most important thing for a team, sticking together, it’s the only way it’s going to get better.

“And if it’s going to get better, it depends on us. We are the only solution, there’s no one else who can make a difference, it’s us. That’s what we are going to do and hopefully the hard work and determination pays off."

Ultimately, Kamaldeen's efforts went unrewarded as Saints suffered their 15th defeat of the season thanks to Joao Gomes’s late winner.

"A disappointing result,” the 20-year-old reflected. “We gave it our all, and we had so many chances. We wasted so many chances. We should have done better with taking them.

"We had so many shots, so many crosses in the box, we had more chances than them. Especially when they’re playing with 10, and we have 11, there is no way they should beat us in this game.

"We’re just disappointed and everybody in the team knows we must do better. There’s a couple of good things we’ve done in the game, and there’s so many things we can improve, that’s what we should look at.

“The positives, to keep them, and the negatives, to make sure we don’t repeat the same mistakes again.”

Kamaldeen and his team now have a full week to prepare before they are back in action on Saturday when they visit West London to face Chelsea.

It remains to be seen who will be leading the Saints team from the touchline at Stamford Bridge after Jones was given his marching orders less than 24 hours after the Wolves disappointment.

Ruben Selles is taking charge of first-team training in the build-up to the weekend as Saints pursue a third permanent manager of the season with former Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch strongly linked to the St Mary’s vacancy.
