BOSS Ruben Selles has insisted that it’s pointless for Saints to be eyeing the Premier League table and results from their rivals because ‘if we don’t win matches, then it doesn’t matter.’
Saints blew another chance to close the gap on those above them, folding in the second half at St Mary’s on Saturday and allowing Crystal Palace to cruise to victory.
The result means Saints remain bottom of the table but they were handed something of a mini-lifeline thanks to Everton’s 3-1 defeat at Fulham which keeps the gap to safety at four points.

Time is very clearly running out for Saints who now have seven games to save their Premier League status.
And asked about his previous comments that he doesn’t watch the table, Selles explained following Saturday’s loss:
"Absolutely. When we say that we don't look at the table what we mean is that we don't expend energy to say 'this team has been winning' and if they don't win because then we are just looking at what the others do but we actually cannot affect that.
"What we need to do is we need to perform and then we need to win football matches and put our energy into that because if we don't win football matches then it doesn't matter what the gap is, we will never move.

"That's what I mean when I say we are not looking at the table. Our full focus is on our performance and on the results. And then if we don't win matches then doesn't it matter what happened in the other games."
"We keep fighting and we keep going for every game and that's been there from the very beginning and then now it's our task just to wake up tomorrow and then go for more, go for it and then be ready for the next game on and compete and be the very best."
Saints are back in action on Friday night when they head to the Emirates for a mammoth challenge against league-leaders Arsenal.
