JOIN Daily Echo Saints reporter Benjy Nurick from St Mary's as he looks back and assesses Southampton's dismal 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Thursday night.

Desperately in need of three points to help kick-start their flailing survival bid, Saints barely laid a glove on their South Coast neighbors as Marcus Tavernier's second half deflected strike proved the difference.

Saints did finally wake up for the closing stages at St Mary's and thought they were level when Che Adams came off the bench and powered home a close-range volley but fitting of the meek performance as a whole, the goal was ruled out by VAR for offside against the striker.

The result leaves Saints six points adrift of safety now with only five games left to play. With fixtures remaining against Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Fulham, Brighton, and Liverpool - three of those away from home - Saints appear destined for the Championship. 

After their latest failed opportunity, hard questions must be asked at all levels of the club.
