FORMER Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy has told Saints manager Ruben Selles he needs to “calm down” due to his touchline antics.

The Spanish boss has now overseen 10 successive matches without victory in the Premier League after Saints were beaten 4-3 at Nottingham Forest on Monday.

Although the scoreline was close run by the end of 102 minutes of play, Saints were a goal down at all times from the first quarter of an hour of the contest.

Selles was seen bouncing up and down the touchline barking instructions – Stuart Armstrong refused to comment on similar behaviour when asked by the Daily Echo at Newcastle United last week.

But ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham man Murphy admitted he would be driven insane by Selles’s antics while commentating during the clash at City Ground.

On talkSPORT’s live broadcast, he said: “The manager needs to calm down. He makes me anxious, never mind his players.

“I’ve seen some managers who are up and down on the touchline but he’s kicking every ball, he’s trying to tell every player where to be with every action they take. It would drive me insane being close to him on that pitch.

"I was very lucky. I played under Dario Gradi, Gerard Houllier, Roy Hodgson, very calm managers," Murphy added.

“Pep Guardiola can be very animated, Jurgen Klopp and Mikel Arteta can be but this is quite out there.

“There’s a lot going on, he looks nervous, anxious, all those things. I think if you’re a player in a relegation dogfight and you’re seeing him, I think that adds to your woes, it doesn’t help you."
