FORMER Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has provided insight into why his move to Saints fell apart, insisting that the ‘timing wasn't right.’

Following Nathan Jones’ sacking after just eight games in charge, Saints turned to the American and just when it seemed to be on the cusp of completion, Marsch pulled out.

Now, speaking with The Athletic, he has shared why he decided to reject Saints before doing the same with Leicester City.

“I would say that both clubs were amazing and the people were fantastic, but the timing wasn’t right,” Marsch said.

"There have been a lot of little discussions about potential opportunities, which I always love those discussions because it's important to get to the bottom of understanding what the vision is, from my perspective and from different clubs' perspective," he said.

“I’m fortunate that there’s still people that are interested in what I do. I still love coaching and my next job will be all about finding the best fit possible.”

Saints went on to appoint Ruben Selles to the managerial role until the end of the season following a shock victory at Stamford Bridge in his sole game as interim boss.

And despite a good start that saw the Spaniard win two of his first three games in charge, Saints are now destined for the Championship after winning none of their last ten league matches.
