WELL, we’re down to our final three of these. Saints are still alive in the relegation battle - barely - but that could change today.

Failure to beat Fulham will see Saints' stay in the Premier League come to an end but manager Ruben Selles is insistent that he and his team will continue fighting until it's mathematically decided.

Can they keep things alive with three points this afternoon? It's hard to trust Saints right now considering their ten-game winless run but as FA Cup-winning boss Lawrie McMenemy says; 'miracles do happen.'

So who will be the players to take part in a potentially seismic day in the history of Southampton Football Club. Here's our best guess at a predicted team for today's meeting with Fulham...

Goalkeeper

It’s been an interesting few weeks for Saints’ goalkeeping department with Alex McCarthy replacing Gavin Bazunu with only six games left in the season. And it’s fair to say that McCarthy hasn’t exactly set the world alight with no clean sheets and eight goals conceded in his three games.

Still, it seems like that McCarthy will keep his place, at least until relegation is officially confirmed. Selles could always spring a surprise, but we’ve gone with the current number one to keep his job for now.

Defence

With Armel Bella-Kotchap’s season-ending hamstring injurt at Nottingham Forest, Saints will need to find a new partner for recent stalwart Jan Bednarek.

Duje Caleta-Car was first off the bench in Saints’ recent 3-3 draw with Arsenal but at the City Ground it was Lyanco who replaced Bella-Kotchap.

For that reason, we’re going with the Brazilian to accompany Bednarek while Kyle Walker-Peters will keep his place. The final spot is going to Ainsley Maitland-Niles but that is more a reflection of the lack of options available to Selles rather than the Arsenal loanee’s form.

Midfield

The middle of the park has become easily the simplest portion of the team to predict with Romeo Lavia and James Ward-Prowse near certainties to start at the base of midfield.

Meanwhile, Charly Alcaraz - brilliant yet raw and inconsistent - should join them.

Attack

With Che Adams a doubt for the Fulham test, Selles will likely be required to find a replacement although a late fitness test will give Saints' starting striker as much time as possible to prove his fitness.

Should Adams indeed fail to return in time, Selles could continue with the striker-less formation that started against Arsenal, Bournemouth, and Newcastle in recent weeks but we're going with a surprise roll of the dice: Paul Onuachu.

The striker has barely played since signing from Genk in the summer, starting none of Saints' last 11 Premier League matches. But needing a spark and a change to end heir 10-game winless run, perhaps now is the time for the Nigerian to return from the start.

Alongside Onuachu, Stuart Armstrong has impressed in the past two weeks with a goal and an assist and should start again.

The final place in the side could go to any of Theo Walcott, Moi Elyounoussi, or Kamaldeen Sulemana, but we’ve gone for the latter considering Saints desperate need to get on the front foot and win the game.
