SAINTS legend Matt Le Tissier did not hold back in his assessment of the club’s relegation fight, saying: "That squad should hang their heads in shame.”

The St Mary’s side went out without as much as a whimper with relegation from the Premier League confirmed after a 2-0 home defeat to Fulham on Saturday.

Saints failed to win any of their last 11 games as manager Ruben Selles and his players could not do nearly enough to even prolong the fight to the final two matches of the season.

Le Tissier, who was never relegated with Saints and scored 100 Premier League goals in 270 appearances to ensure that record, has been watching his boyhood club all campaign.

“Sad to see what’s happened to my team this season,” Le Tissier shared on his official Twitter account. "So much money invested (140 million-ish) yet so little return.

Daily Echo:

"I’ve never witnessed such a gutless, lazy and passionless performance from a relegation-threatened team in all my life, that squad should hang their heads in shame.”

However, the 54 year old added: “It’s going to need a huge shift in mentality and a manager able to instil confidence in the young players but if we can do those things then no reason why we can’t come straight back up next season.”

Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton, who played 188 league games for Saints, also reacted on his social media in the aftermath of confirmation.

He said: "I’m so sad that Southampton have been relegated. I had five great years at the club, the fans are so passionate and must be gutted!"
