FORMER Saints manager Nigel Adkins says he will “never be surprised” by the quality of the club’s supporters after spectacular scenes before the friendly match at Reading.

New boss Russell Martin went over to introduce himself to fans for the first time on UK soil ahead of kick-off at Select Car Leasing Stadium.

The 37 year old was met with a roaring chorus of support from the almost 3,000 travelling fans who had made the short journey to Berkshire.

They were treated to a first win under Martin, as Jan Bednarek, James Ward-Prowse, Adam Armstrong and Joe Aribo got on the scoresheet in a 4-2 win.

Posting on his social media after the match, Adkins – who managed Saints to promotion from the Championship in 2012 – reminisced.

Martin said: “When we went out there we were really surprised by how many fans were there and the reception we got, so we’re really grateful for that.”

Adkins responded: “Russell, speaking from experience, never be surprised how much the Southampton supporters will get behind you if you give them everything.

“I’m grateful and appreciate us being together as one on our journey. Good luck for the exciting season ahead!”

Although Adkins was dismissed shortly into the Premier League season that followed, his side finished second in the Championship more than a decade ago.

They sealed promotion with a 4-0 win over Coventry City on the final day of the league campaign – a day which also saw Portsmouth relegated to League One.
