SAINTS manager Russell Martin labelled Jack Stephens “brave” and revealed the defender will be captain if skipper James Ward-Prowse is not playing.

The 29 year old penned a new two-year deal just ahead of travelling up to Sheffield Wednesday and helping his side secure an opening-match win at Hillsborough.

Stephens was vital in defence, had one blocked off the line and was continually driving his team forward on the ball in their 2-1 win to kick off the Championship campaign.

After some speculation over his future, Stephens was convinced to sign new terms primarily through conversations with the new manager – and the love goes both ways between them.

After the match, Martin told the Daily Echo: “I said to you before there will be players who look a lot different to how they did before and Jack Stephens was outstanding – they all were.

“I’m really proud because it’s not easy. Jack was one of many who were excellent and I said to you that he will be so important.

“Not just on the pitch but because of how he conducts himself and the energy he brings,” the boss continued.

“Ultimately, he is brave. He is brave as a defender but also so brave on the ball and he showed his quality so I am really pleased. If Prowsey is not playing, Jack will be captain.”

Stephens has made 152 appearances for Saints since a 2011 move from Plymouth Argyle to St Mary’s as a teenager, 12 years ago.

He spent last season on loan at AFC Bournemouth, helping the Cherries to Premier League survival, having fallen out of favour under former boss Ralph Hasenhuttl.

On signing his deal, Stephens told club media: “I’m very pleased.

“It's nice to get it all sorted before the season starts and just allows me to focus on the football and hopefully have a positive season.”
