ADAM Armstrong felt Saints should have beaten Norwich City on Saturday, but was pleased with the character his teammates showed to salvage a draw.

The 26 year old scored his second and third goals of the season as Southampton fought back three times to record a 4-4 draw against the Canaries.

It was Armstrong’s 97th-minute penalty, his second spot kick of the game, that saw Saints clinch a point in injury time.

Despite snatching a dramatic draw the forward was left wanting more after the final whistle.

Speaking to the Daily Echo after the game he said: "First of all, I thought we deserved the three points today

"But the main thing is to not lose games and we dug deep towards the end to earn a good point.

“I think the mentality in the squad is very good. The game kept going goal for goal and the sloppy goals are something that we need to cut out.

“But we are still only in the second game of what is hopefully going to be a good season.

"If we can cut the sloppy goals out, then it’s going to be really nice to watch."

Having struggled in front of goal since his arrival on the south coast, Armstrong has shown early signs of refinding his Blackburn Rovers form this season.

His tally of three goals from two games is already better than the total he managed last campaign.

The former England youth international's fellow forward Che Adams has also bagged twice from the bench in as many league games.

Armstrong is hoping the pair can form a prolific partnership this season and help Saints towards their promotion target.

“I feel good to have scored two penalty goals. I had to keep my cool in the last minute to put one in the back of the net, which was the best thing.

“It didn’t really cross my mind (to not take the second penalty). I just picked the ball up and I knew where I wanted to put it and luckily it went into the back of the net.

“There’s always a few shouts from the goalkeeper, but it was a good laugh. I just had to try and keep my head and put it into the back of the net.

“I get on with Che on and off the pitch, he’s a good friend of mine and it’s great that he can come off the bench and score the goals that he has."
