CHE Adams netted another injury-time goal and helped Saints secure a dramatic late 2-1 win at Plymouth Argyle.

The Scottish international tapped home from close range to take his tally for the season up to three goals.

Nathan Tella had given Southampton the lead in the opening minutes of the first half before Ryan Hardie struck back for the hosts minutes later.

Here's how we rated every Saints player's performance as they maintained their unbeaten start to the season…

Gavin Bazunu – 7.

Almost gave the ball away early on but calmed down the situation with some good handling over next few minutes. Pulled out of a sliding challenge on Hardie well but the striker still went down – referee booked forward for diving. Claimed and punched crosses in added time to relieve pressure.

Kyle Walker-Peters – 6.

Attempted to win a soft penalty with a bit of theatrics in first half but nothing given. Good control on a long ball to quickly turn defence into attack in the second half, with the scores level at 1-1. Fourth most involved for passes.

Jan Bednarek – 6.

Least involved player in defence with the ball progressing through Stephens. Pulled out of position for a few counterattacks but no major errors in possession or defending.

Jack Stephens – 7.

Regularly the conduit between Bazunu and the midfield in the opening stages and led the side for completed passes by half-time. Constantly won battles in the middle of the park and was noticeable throughout.

Ryan Manning – 6.

Organising teammates in possession and took on set-piece role. Kept Whittaker quiet in first half, making a match-leading two tackles. Great cutting square ball to Tella on restart to force a corner. Unfortunate to slip and allow Whittaker in for Hardie’s equaliser. Created match-highest four chances, tied with Adam Armstrong.

Shea Charles – 7.

Attacked set pieces with determination. Little bit casual with a backpass to leave Stephens high and dry and nearly concede a good chance. Booked for handling a Manning corner but was having his shirt pulled. Made four interceptions in first half, with one the next leading.

Stuart Armstrong – 7.

Strong sliding tackle to regain possession and stop a counter early on. Hit a good free-kick straight at the goalkeeper. Thumped the crossbar from range in the second half. Praised by Russell Martin at full time as helping the midfield three.

Adam Armstrong – 9.

Won a free kick in a dangerous area early on, taking a knock in the process. Looked to spin in behind constantly but probably needed more presence in the middle – playing a new position still. Played across for Tella’s opener after the break. Nearly set Edozie for a first goal after a strong run. Great free-kick well saved late on and created Adams winner, before some stellar defensive work.

Nathan Tella – 7.

Slipped as he took a shot in the area but forced a corner. Did really well to shepherd out for a goal kick in a dangerous situation in his own corner. Had another shot saved after getting to Manning’s deep ball. Put Saints ahead with a left-footed finish from the edge of the area.

Sam Edozie – 6.

Had one shout for a penalty downed after a hand to the face inside the area but nothing given. Not able to navigate the ball beyond his marker when stood up one-to-one. Attempted to curl one in but dropped just wide of the far post. Sprinted back 30 yards to win the ball from Cundle and performed a similar action later on.

Che Adams – 7.

Had the fewest touches of any player in the first half (nine). Could have done better with a deep Armstrong corner kick but headed into the keeper’s arms. Headed over from close range but was ruled offside anyway. Scored the late winner from close range.

Substitutes:

Sam Amo-Ameyaw - 7.

Impactful from the bench. Looked confident and assured despite his age and volunteered himself to take corners.

Joe Aribo - 6.

Came into a thin midfield and was given a tough task but did little to impact. Made no mistakes with over 15 minutes of action.

Sekou Mara - N/A.

Came on for added time with no time to make an impact.
