THE thing that brought all the supporters in England together this week was our performance against Scotland.

Games against Scotland have always been special, especially those that are played at Hampden Park.

Any and every supporter should save their pounds and pennies to attend a game at Hampden Park one day. They'll learn what makes that ground special.

They’ll experience the atmosphere before the players come out onto the pitch. It’s a true example of how to build up support for your team with singing and shouting.

Full marks to England for the 3-1 win. Apart from a good team display, one player that stood out was Jude Bellingham. He caught everyone's eye.

Bryan Robson, an ex-England captain and Manchester United legend, said in a column recently that he couldn’t believe that he was only 16 years old when he first saw him play at Birmingham.

Not only is Jude now a full England international, but he is playing for one of the biggest teams in the world, Real Madrid.

Before that, he was a star in Germany. That background of playing away from home will have helped elevate his game at a quicker rate than even he might have expected.

Just to beat Scotland has always been a huge wish for England managers and staff. But to win away from home made it that extra bit special.

I’m sure the dressing room would have been the happiest most of the players would have ever been when the other officials came down to congratulate them at the end of the game.

The thing I will certainly be looking forward to watching is how Bellingham progresses and reacts to this attention he is getting.

The fact that he has been brought up playing his football abroad will eventually help the England squad.

His experiences playing on the continent could be the added edge needed to help England get over the line in international tournaments.

I’m sure a modern Alan Ball type will be so helpful to the manager. If he could get into the Premiership that would be brilliant.

Another player that stood out was Kyle Walker. He is 33 now and has earned 78 caps.

It would be good for him to sit next to Bellingham and make sure he handles all the extra attention in the best way that he can.

As I have said before let's hope that Gareth Southgate can win something, and he will be persuaded to carry on as England manager.

He has obviously won over our players, which believe me isn’t always an easy thing. The first one to get the blame when the results don't right at the international level is the manager - and not the players.

The thing that puzzles me a bit is Harry Maguire, who has had a really good career so far but is now receiving unfair hate.

His recent story shows how much modern football has changed. Instead of being praised, he is going through a tough time.

While he has been supported by the England manager, he can’t get a game for Manchester United and I’m told the crowd has turned against him.

When Manchester United are winning everything, their support goes up and beyond, but when things aren’t going well their criticism also goes beyond.

England fans too should stop and think about the good times he has given us over the years.

For some reason, Saints have got two evening games over the next week, one last night and another coming up as soon as Tuesday.

Let’s hope that on Friday night we saw a win against Leicester, and let's fill the ground once more against Ipswich to cheer on the team and keep them towards the top of the table.

If Southampton can win both of these games then it shows that we are more than ready to get back into the Premier League.
