SAINTS defender Juan Larios is set for another extended spell on the sidelines after an injury setback while on the verge of a return.

The Spanish youngster has not featured for Saints since an initial hamstring concern picked up in November 2022, following his summer deadline day transfer.

Larios, 19, returned to action with an under-21 appearance in front of former boss Ruben Selles in March but lasted just 12 minutes before coming off injured again.

Larios is highly rated by current manager Russell Martin and was taking part in full training with the first team during the September international break.

However, the former Manchester City left-back was injured in training and Martin has now confirmed he will not be available for selection in the near future.

Martin explained: “We had a big setback with Juan so he is no longer on the way back. He will be out for another couple of months still.

“It’s really innocuous and I’m really devastated for him. He’s a top lad and deserves better luck than he has had.

“Juan is rehabbing and it is frustrating for everyone here. It’s no fault of his or no fault of the medical team. Something these things just happen.”

He continued: “The amount of work and care that has gone into him to slowly integrate him couldn’t have been taken any slower than we have done.

“It’s just one of those things unfortunately for Juan. We’ll support him, he’s a top young player and he was really starting to get into a groove.

“We were enjoying watching him. He’s a smooth footballer and so aggressive as well. It’s another hurdle for him but we’ll support him all the way through.

“When he does get to a place where he can contribute, he will, hugely. He’s a great young talent but we will have to be patient with him and get to the bottom of what’s happened.”

There is no timescale for the return of Larios but summer signing Ross Stewart is working his way back with hope he can play a part following the October international break.

Stewart, signed for an £8million fee, has been on the grass taking part in individual shooting drills with two coaches monitoring his progress.
