SAINTS dropped two points at home to Rotherham after failing to make their domination pay in matchday 11 of the Championship.

Russell Martin's side controlled over 80 per cent of the ball and had 19 shots towards the Rotherham goal but could only muster a 1-1 draw.

Jan Bednarek had an effort cleared off the line in added time as they pushed for a winner ahead of the international break.

Here is how we rated the players...

Gavin Bazunu – 6.

Did not have a save to make in the first half but came out of his box for a headed clearance under pressure in the second. Beaten by a brilliant lofted finish, Rotherham’s first shot on target. Saved a deflected shot late in the game at 1-1.

Kyle Walker-Peters – 8.

Kept the attack alive for the opening goal taking a man on and crossing. His low delivery to Armstrong for a second, which was ruled out. Constantly creative and relatively faultless afternoon.

Jan Bednarek – 7.

Recovered possession regularly as Saints limited Rotherham to very little. Good game overall. Effort cleared off the line twice in added time.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis – 7.

Completed the most passes of any player on the pitch in the first half (54) with the highest accurate rate (96 per cent). Helped limit Rotherham to just two shots on target all game but it was his defensive header that led to Hugill’s volleyed equaliser.

Ryan Manning – 6.

Made an important recovery in midfield to prevent a counter-attack in first-half. Delivery to Adams was pinpoint and could have been scored. Deliveries when chasing the game were not good enough.

Flynn Downes – 6.

Tidy on the ball and barely conceded possession at all, while he was also the most fouled player of the first half (two). Not much to say about the West Ham loanee from thereon, which would have resulted in a 7 had they got the win.

Will Smallbone – 6.

Credited with creating two chances in the first half; no player was credited with more. Unlucky not to score his second of the season as Johansson saved from close range but should have put the game to bed.

Stuart Armstrong – 8.

Started the attack he finished for the opening goal. Made a sliding tackle to reprieve Bednarek of a short pass on the edge of his own area in the same half. Moved the ball with real finesse and exhibited good corner deliveries.

Adam Armstrong – 6.

Cheeky backheel finish was ruled out for offside, which could have been a goal-of-the-season contender. Came alive at the end of the first half just as momentum faded, good link-up with Adams. Otherwise, not as involved.

Kamaldeen Sulemana – 6.

Played with swagger and confidence from the start. Caused the opposite man Lembikisa real problems. Lost the ball a few times trying to be inventive before his 63-minute substitution. Didn’t show the end product on this occasion.

Che Adams – 6.

Hit the woodwork with a header for Stu to open. Classy flick on for a potential second before offside ruled it out. Denied another headed goal by a top Johansson save before seeing a volley blocked. Should have scored and then not involved for the rest of the game.

Substitutes

Sam Edozie – 6.

Forced a yellow card from Tiehi soon after entering the field and was cut down throughout. Similar to what we expect from Edozie, good on the ball but didn't have the end-product to fully back it up.

Charly Alcaraz – 6.

Lost possession in a dangerous area facing his own goal but was determined to get it back and did. Was denied at the near

Ryan Fraser – 7.

Immediately got stuck in after his substitution. Set Smallbone up a peach in the area with the second goal only denied by a brilliant Johansson save. Again, created a goalscoring chance in added time firing into a melee before Bednarek’s shot was cleared off the line.

Joe Aribo - N/A.

Came on in the 86th minute and had limited involvement. Looked slow in possession but won back the ball when he lost it, clearing from his own box on one occasion.

Sekou Mara - N/A.

Did not get involved down the right after replacing Adams in final five minutes.
