MANAGER Russell Martin believes set piece coach Andreas Georgson's experience working at Arsenal helped Saints bounce back from their poor form.

Prior to mounting a three-game unbeaten run, with wins over Leeds United and Stoke City and a 1-1 draw against Rotherham, Southampton had lost four on the bounce.

Georgson has previously experienced a tough run of results during his time at Arsenal working under Mikel Arteta while his side struggled to win.

The Spaniard has since turned things around at the Emirates, and Martin pointed out how Georgson's experience at the Gunners during that run has been a big help to Southampton.

“It’s been great to have him in," Martin told the Daily Echo. "He’s been really important during this period because he was there at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta when they had a really tough run.

“There was a lot of noise around the club at that time. Now, the same people who love Arteta as a manager are the same ones that wanted him out.

“It’s really interesting that he lived and worked through that - he can offer a lot of advice and composure around that. He’s been a really good addition."

The 41 year old arrived on the south coast just before Saints opening game of the season against Sheffield Wednesday.

While his official title is Southampton's set piece coach, the Swede's role includes more than what the title suggests.

During a match, Georgson can be seen running through tactical information with substitutes before they are introduced. He has also been a regular at Saints Under-21 games since his arrival.

“He’s been great, I really like Andreas," Martin continued. "He’s got a lot of experience and some really great ideas around set pieces.

“I know we have conceded some set pieces, but we have looked really solid and a real threat from them.

“He will continue to work with the players to add that, along with the other stuff. There is a lot for the players to take in.

“It’s been a really important part of the process and we all know how important set pieces are in this division.

“There is a big focus on them. The lads have really bought into it and into working with Andreas because he is such a good guy.

“The way he delivers (information) to them is really good. He’s a really important member of our team now alongside Carl Martin, Gilly (Matt Gill), Ben (Parker), Rhys (Owen), Dean Thornton - all those guys.

“He’s not just involved with set pieces. He will give his opinion on certain things. As a coaching staff, we will sit, discuss and argue."
