SAINTS manager Russell Martin credited “the effort” travelling supporters went through to see their team win 2-1 at Hull City.

Loanee Ryan Fraser scored in the final seconds of the clash after Will Smallbone’s opener was cancelled out by Liam Delap in the first half.

Some supporters were unable to attend due to chaos at King’s Cross Station, caused by Storm Babet, but Hull sources estimate around 2,000 were sold.

Speaking after the match, Martin told the Daily Echo: “I was made aware of that before the game and I am grateful to all of them that came and the effort they must have made to get there.

“In the second half, their voice and noise recognised the team were on the attack and looking to win and they helped us through that moment for sure.

“Away from home against a team playing well and that have real belief in what they’re doing, they’re in a really good place here.”

He added: “We didn’t get a few details quite right and we weren’t aggressive enough, but I thought it was a really good game of football.

“We asked for a few things in the second half and the biggest on was just a bit more aggression in and out of possession, the tactical things don’t matter unless the mentality is right.

“Thankfully, I thought we were outstanding in the second half – one of the best performances we have had I think, in the last 30 minutes.

“Hull got tired because of how dominant we were but they still had a threat on the counterattack so we had to nullify that, and there was moments where Gavin (Bazunu) was called upon.

“We created so many chances in the second half and as an away performance I am really happy. The stats were exactly how I felt about the game.

“It will be good learning for our players and for me, our approach wasn’t quite right and maybe we were a bit too safe or showed them respect.”

On match-winner Fraser, who scored his first goal for the club, Martin said: “People asked me about Ryan’s character and stuff before but he’s a brilliant lad.

“He’s intelligent, he understands football and really enjoys being here. We’ve been trying to get him fit playing league games which is tough, but he does everything properly.

“In training, the way he warms up, drills and games. He made a really important foul for us, took a booking and the finish is top-drawer.

“He has real technical ability, I’m really pleased for him as he’s a great guy.”
