MANAGER Russell Martin insisted he is "really proud" of Southampton's performance in the 1-1 draw at Coventry City, adding it is "not one bit a slip-up".

The boss was left frustrated after a 1-1 draw at Watford on Saturday, stating after the match Saints could not afford too many more "slip-ups" this season.

The St Mary's side visited CBS Arena looking to make it 13 matches unbeaten, the club's longest run since 1984, and did so.

Substitute Sam Edozie struck to level after Hadji Wright's second-half opener with neither side able to find a winner.

Speaking to the Daily Echo after the match, Martin said: "Two tough away games and two games without Flynn Downes, who has been really important for us.

"I am really proud of the performance as I thought we were really good tonight against a well-organised team.

"The job Mark Robins and the gang have done here is so good. I thought they were really good but I felt their only chances would be from pouncing on a mistake.

"Unfortunately, they scored from that. We have a moment where we are a bit untidy with the ball and then they can pounce.

"We had a couple of moments in front of the goal and if we score one of those, brilliant. The reaction to going 1-0 down was fantastic."

The boss continued: "The subs had a really good impact, Edozie and (Ryan) Fraser, and I thought we were going to score a second goal. Those moments need to come to more.

"The last 10 minutes became really open because both teams were trying to win, neither team was hanging on but neither team was happy - which I loved about the game.

"Overall, I am really proud of the play we had in the tight moments in a brilliant atmosphere where the crowd thought Coventry could steal the ball.

"We have come a long way and the away support was fantastic again."

Despite picking up another point at an in-form Championship opponent, victories for Ipswich Town and Leicester City widened the gap between automatics to 12 points.

Asked if he considers the two points dropped as a "slip-up", Martin responded: "Not one bit. How can you?

"With the way we played, the energy. We can't control what the top two are doing in making Championship history.

"Over the last 13 games, I am pretty sure we have been the best team in the league but we are paying for so much disruption and the club being in complete transition.

"It's not a slip-up and I'm not going to talk about any other team. It is frustrating that we've only got two points but we're missing a key player.

"I don't think the away fans think it's a slip-up with the way they were acting after. I said to the players that they should be proud of that connection.

"I am annoyed that we don't win but not one bit is it a slip-up. It's been an amazing run we've been on."
