MANAGER Russell Martin had no issued with Shea Charles "taking one for the team" by being sent off in Southampton's 1-0 win over QPR.

The young Northern Ireland international was given his marching orders after two yellow cards in 21 minutes.

The red card left Saints to defend with 10 men for the final five minutes of the game as the hosts applied on late pressure.

Charles was applauded by his teammates in the dressing room following the final whistle at Loftus Road.

Speaking to the Daily Echo after the game, Martin explained the importance of Charles sacrificing himself for Southampton's benefit.

"Shea Charles was really good (until the red card). He has to do that for the team.

"The other lads applauded him in the dressing room after the game because it was an important moment.

"If you get sent off for something stupid, descent or a wild tackle (I'd be frustrated.)

“He was on a yellow card and one of their biggest threats was the counterattack.

"I think it's a good foul. There are good fouls in the game and that was one of them.

"Now he misses out on a game, but I'm never going to criticise someone for taking one for the team."
