SAINTS manager Russell Martin admitted the likelihood of making Ryan Fraser's stay permanent this month is low - despite interest all around.

The 29 year old scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season in Saturday's 4-0 win over Walsall in the FA Cup third round.

It was the first time Newcastle United loanee Fraser had completed 90 minutes in a Saints shirt since arriving on a season-long basis this summer.

Both Fraser and Martin would like to extend the Scotland international's terms but the boss concedes it is unlikely to happen yet.

Asked if Fraser's loan could be made permanent this month, Martin responded: "I don't know, it's out of my remit really.

"Would I like to make it permanent? Yes. The chance of that happening I think, because of the finances involved, the timing and his situation, is low.

"I don't know if it will be feasible right now but he just needs to keep doing what he is doing, he is in a really good place and enjoying it."

The boss concluded: "We will see but I am pretty sure he would love to stay here beyond this season."

Southampton's January spending is currently limited due to financial fair play regulations and it likely renders additional spend on Fraser unnecessary.

The winger is already at St Mary's until the end of the campaign and Saints can reassess their situation in May.

Fraser has become a fan-favourite for his performances as a substitute but, after netting his first goals as a starter, now has the chance to become a 90-minute man.

Martin insists the ankle injury to Sam Edozie, which will keep the youngster out of action until February, puts Fraser "in the frame" to start.

The boss added: "I don't know if he will be my left winger for the next few weeks as you don't know what's going to happen tomorrow.

"But we trust that he can keep going, he is a really fit boy and he just keeps running - he is a real good example to all of our wide players.

"Keep running all the time because it is so worth it."
