Every word Saints manager Russell Martin said in his pre-Rotherham press conference, the morning after winter deadline day.

Waking up happy with two in and two out? How do you assess the window?

RM: It's been very good I think. We have ended in a stronger place than we started with the two additions and that is all you can ever hope for.

Mason (Holgate) leaves with our best wishes, he probably didn't play as much as he would like and it didn't work out as well as both would have liked.

I had a quick conversation yesterday and thanked him and he thanked us, and he has an opportunity to hopefully more than he did here in the Premier League.

Charly (Alcaraz) has gone out of the building for six months. It's an amazing opportunity for him to play for a huge club with a huge history.

He is also a player who has probably been a bit frustrated with his minutes and we knew he had interest from a few clubs throughout January.

Joe Rothwell was signed early as an addition if Charly stayed but also he was the guy we wanted. If Charly stayed, fantastic.

As he has gone, we already had Joe in the building. I think it suits everyone. Charly wants to play more football and now he has a chance to make an impression at a huge club.

We have a player here that is really hungry and had limited time at his parent club. We also maintain Charly as a player.

If he does brilliantly and Juventus want to sign him then that is also good for everyone. We have maintained a good asset, both as a player and financially.

I am really happy with the business we have done and how we have gone about everything. It was so nice yesterday to have a deadline day where I didn't have to worry about anything."

I had a few texts yesterday saying 'You must be so busy'. No mate, I went and had a swim in the sea and walked the dog.

Happy with David Brooks arriving?

RM: We have three number nines and one of them has been playing as a seven all season (Adam Armstrong) and he is still the top scorer.

Him, Che Adams and Sekou Mara are three really different number nines but all scoring at the moment or in a good place.

Brooksy, Kamaldeen, Ryan Fraser, Sam Edozie, Sam Amo(-Ameyaw) - we have some really good options at the moment out wide.

Brooksy was our first choice, as was Joe, but it took a bit longer than we would have liked. We watched him play against Swansea on Thursday.

We panicked that he played too well and they wouldn't let him out anymore. We spoke to a lot of people about him.

We watched him play for Bournemouth and Wales and obviously he has overcome something so huge in his life.

To get through that in the way he has is incredible and it says a lot about him as a character. Everyone told us how good he is as a person as well.

Jason (Wilcox) had him at Man City and coached him. I think he actually released him and Brooksy says that is the best thing that ever happened to him.

Jason's taking credit for that one. I spoke to him and he really wanted to come here.

We really wanted him to come here and I am so grateful it happened. It will be a fantastic addition for us and he is a specialist in a position we haven't had all season.

We have done a few different things this season but he will really help us for sure.

What are you expecting from Rotherham?

RM: Hopefully this season has shown everyone that the league is so tough. I don't think there is any easy games.

Rotherham have a new manager and the players are working so hard for him. They are very well organised and good at what they do.

They make things really difficult - especially at their stadium.

Hopefully, we are prepared for that as we can be. We have tried to make sure the players are aware of what the game is going to look like and what is to come.

The challenge for us is always to be the team we want to be and we have been on an incredible run because we have had the courage to do that.

We have had the desire, intensity, and willingness to run as well so if we keep that then we will go there full of confidence.

It is a big month for us, in every way. We want to add another game in there in the cup as well if we can.

We have an excellent squad that will get us through that. Sam Edozie will be back in the squad this weekend, Kamaldeen Sulemana the next.

James Bree will be hopefully the week after that - there is real competition and they train like beasts. The environment has been really nice.

We haven't even mentioned about this in the January window but keeping everyone like Kyle (Walker-Peters), Stuey (Armstrong) and Jan Bednarek.

There was interest in Jan early on that sort of carried on - I made a joke about it to the lads on Tuesday as it was a very different window to the summer.

Nobody came to see me and said they wanted to go and I could see the lads were smiling. I haven't had one conversation about a player wanting to go.

Hopefully, the window will make them feel even better about themselves and we will keep doing what we do.

That is fantastic to get that reaction and testament to your team and what you have done?

RM: I hope so. It's a testament to the club and the feeling around here in general and I think they are proud of what they are doing.

I feel like some of them feel like they have such an opportunity to get to the Premier League and to have a chance to show what they can do.

A chance to get rid of the frustration they had from being in the Premier League over the last year, to do it in this way because they know we won't change if we get there.

Hopefully, they want that opportunity to express themselves and to maximise what they can do. Some of them see that opportunity for sure.

For those that don't, I hope they are just enjoying themselves now and want to be here and they are happy.

Even though there are a lot of games, is there now a real 'here we go' momentum as the window is shut?

RM: I don't think it will change anything for us, people keep talking to me about the last 10 games and what will you do.

Will you bring them in a bit more and do this or do that? It makes no sense to me that you would do something for 36 games and then change.

It is the same now. The window has not affected how we worked and the window closing won't affect how we work.

If it does anything in terms of any unease at all in the players, or they felt maybe there was still something or whatever - which they haven't shown - now they can really concentrate.

They have given everything they have got and that is all we can ever ask.
