YOUNG goalkeeper Josh Jeffries said he was "buzzing" after signing his first professional contract at Saints and added: "I want to progress as high as I can."

The 18 year old joined the club in 2022 on a scholarship deal after impressing on trial, having started his career with local non-league neighbours Eastleigh and AFC Totton.

After progressing through the higher academy age groups, and overcoming an injury setback, Jeffries has made his under-21s debut this season.

He has since embarked on his first senior loan with National League South side Worthing, gaining experience at a promotion fighting sixth tier side.

As a boyhood Southampton fan, Jeffries spoke with pride after securing professional terms, until 2027, with the club he, and his family, support.

"I'm buzzing, I have only been here for 18 months or so. It feels good to be able to extend my stay here and the hard work continues.

"Growing up in Southampton, going to the games with my parents, they're proud and happy for me to be here.

“It feels good to be home and play for the club I love so deeply.

"Since I've been here my game has gone to another level, I want to keep doing well out on loan and keep performing.

"In the future I want to progress as high as I can and hopefully make an appearance for the first team."

Academy director Andy Goldie, added: "Josh's progress this season has been very impressive, having only joined the academy 18 months ago.

"This has culminated in him experiencing his first loan move and now earning his first professional contract, which will provide him with the platform to build on what he has achieved so far.

"If he continues to apply himself in the same manner, I'm sure there will be further rewards for him in the future."
